I recently found a second favorite pastime, so besides refinishing furniture going to estate sales is my new favorite hobby. How could I have gone 29 years without ever experiencing an estate sale? I may have went a little overboard buying 25+ picture frames, a tool bench, four headboards, a metal bed frame, a shop vac, palm sander, ear muffs, hammers and a couple other things.
There was one piece that I really, really wanted… A Zenith Hi Fi
Go figure it was the last piece auctioned off of the day and it was pouring down rain. I was half covered under a plastic tarp. I was wet, tired and determined. I was so excited that I ‘won’ it! I couldn’t believe nobody wanted this amazing piece.
The Before Piece
So amazing, right?
So I got to work making this piece as amazing as I knew it could be.
After the staining (which I hate to do because it is messy and stinky) and painting I went over the top with Shellac and the bottom with a sprayable polyurethane. I did it this way because I wanted the top to be a little more shiny than the bottom. The final touch was the decorative metal I got from Home Depot. It came in a sheet 12″x24″ which was perfect for what I needed. I spent a lot of time bending the metal around the protective wood piece. After I got it just right I installed them and I was done! It turned out perfect.
