Home Trends for the Year

While incessantly looking through Houzz, Instagram, Pintrest and countless design magazines I have been noticing some trends for home design. After a couple of weeks of searching, studying and contemplating I have come up with a list of my favorite home trends for the year.

Black Walls

In the past designers have steered clear of using black as a wall color and mostly used it as an accessory color, but if used correctly black walls can make your space luxurious and sophisticated. Black has been my favorite color for as long as I can remember so I am loving this new trend I’m seeing. Black is bold and daring, elegant and modern, powerful and mysterious, so why wouldn’t you want it on your walls?

Black is very dramatic and gives an elegant feel to a room. In feng shui black is a symbol of yin energy and can be expressed as an abundance of life.

Usually dark or black walls have been reserved for large rooms with high ceilings and lots of natural light, but even smaller spaces can look tremendous if all other parts of the room contrast and compliment the dark walls.

You can’t really go wrong with white accents or furniture against a black wall. Add a pop of color and you have an exquisite space.

Black is also the color for the Scandinavian goddess of fertility and represents fertility in other cultures as well, so it could be great for a bedroom… or terrible depending on where you are in life.  For a long time in the Spanish Court black was the color of great dignity.

You could also use vividly colored furniture or decorations that tone down the bold black walls.

Green

As a wall color, as a furniture color, as an accent color we will be seeing a lot of green this year. There are more shades of green than any other color so it gives many, many options to choose from. It’s an exciting alternative to the standard, sometimes boring, neutral colors.

Green exudes positive energy. It reminds people of the green shades found in nature so it evokes a restorative, tranquil emotion. This makes it easy to put into any room in the house.

When it comes to color and decorating you can never go wrong with being inspired from nature.

In feng shui green represents growth, vitality and abundance so it says the ideal place for this color is in a skills or knowledge  room, family and health areas.

Careful not to use green in excess. It can become common, tiresome and boring.

  • When using green as an accent remember that the more neutral the rest of the room is the more the accent will pop.
  • When finding other colors to add to your green area go with any combination you like. It is best to use yellow or blue based colors.  Otherwise over time it could become difficult to look at and even harder to live with.
  • I just had to add this green barn. How awesome is it?

Velvet

Velvet is kind of like candy… moderation is the key. If used in moderation it can make a room sensual and tempting, soft and warm, chic and modern. Velvet can bring the best of all worlds to your room if used right.
However if it is over used it can leave a space looking tacky… you don’t want to cross that line, things can get ugly.

Throughout history velvet has been associated with nobility due to its softness and high cost. It was a rare fabric reserved for the ruling class.
In todays culture velvet is available to everyone, but can still make you feel like a royal. It brings a soft luxury to a room if used sparingly and appropriately.

Velvet gets worn away after years of use so it’s probably not the best to use on high traffic furniture. A headboard or a sitting room couch is a great place to use velvet. It brings texture to a room and is interesting to touch and look at. Texture is big right now in decorating.

Rose Gold

Rose Gold has been a pretty popular look in jewelry lately, so why wouldn’t it eventually get brought to home decorating? Whether it’s just a trend or it is here to stay I am loving the look of it.
Decorating with this romantic color brings a bit of extra warmth while adding a soft feminine touch to a room.

The gorgeous metallic pink trend is showing up everywhere… Homegoods, Target, TJ Maxx.

If you are browsing online and not finding what you are looking for try googling ‘cooper’ instead.
The various shades of rose gold glam up a space while bringing a romantic luxurious feel, perfect for a bedroom.

Don’t be afraid to mix gold, rose gold and copper… talk about a warm, rich look. Put them next to a candle and they look magical.

Want to add a little shine and brightness? Metallics are a perfect way, even if you are just adding a throw pillow or candle stick to the space.

When it comes to decorating, like most choices in life, be confident! If you like it who cares what anyone else thinks.
